Side seams are part of what makes a "retail fit" shirt meaning if you go to a store, shirts will have side seams where the manufacturer made separate front and back pieces and sewed them together. This means they created allowances for the different shape in the front of our body versus the back and it's a big part of what makes this cut unisex.
It's like jeans, you wouldn't want jeans with the same cut in the butt that they have in the crotch - put your jeans on backwards to see what we mean.
